These Matrix mashup quotes won’t free your mind, but they will show you the door. You have to walk through it.
The Matrix is one of the definitive films of our current culture. It established a new bar for special effects. Just as importantly, the storyline and characters are so compelling that entire books and college courses have devoted thought to the philosophical ideas contained therein. Many of the quotes contained have become iconic memes. The characters of Morpheus and Neo and Trinity have taken on lives and meanings of their own. In fact, the ideas and themes are so universal, we thought we’d throw together a few Matrix mashup quotes superimposed on other movies that seem just as fitting. If you’re ready, let’s begin. Otherwise, you can take the blue pill—the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe.
“Don’t think you are. Know you are.”
Luke Skywalker and Neo have a similar mission. Use secret martial arts skills and intuitive knowledge to fight in a transcendental way. This adds the same element to Star Wars as it does to The Matrix. The mentality of a warrior is as important as skill. This Matrix mashup takes Yoda’s “Do or do not. There is no try” to a whole new level. This fight scene between Skywalker and Darth Vader says it all.
“Are you saying I can dodge bullets?”
The Truman Show features a character trying to escape a reality that has been constructed for him. The scene in which Truman Burbank stops the bus is an important one. It shows that he is beginning to awake from the dreamlike delusion he has been in. When Neo raises his hand to stop the bullets in the final scene of The Matrix, he has the same kind of realization. He doesn’t need to dodge bullets. Truman no longer needs to hold onto his fears either.
“There’s a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.”
If you have a sick sense of humor you’ll be laughing instead of thinking about this Matrix mashup. The Revenant bear attack scene is both horrifying and fascinating to watch. Hugh Glass fights a bear and comes to the same conclusion as Morpheus has. Your goal is gonna kick your ass unless you put your conviction into action.
“I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.”
In the comedy What About Bob? Richard Dreyfus plays Dr. Leo Marvin who has the impossible task of helping the lovable yet neurotic Bob Wiley. Finally, in exasperation he ties up Bob and straps explosives to his chest. His intent is to destroy this pest from his life. Bob, however, uses this tragic situation as a therapeutic way to “untie himself” and stay alive to keep on annoying his psychotherapist. The rabbit hole indeed does go deep.
“I am offering you the truth. Nothing more.”
Morpheus is one of the wisest characters in The Matrix. This Matrix mashup takes a noble saying and superimposes it on the equally wise character of Dr. Kurtz played by Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now. These two wise characters offer the truth, even though it isn’t comfortable.
“The Matrix has you.”
If you’re hanging in there so far, take this last Matrix mashup and think on it. The movie Psycho features a shower scene in which Norman Bates commits cold blooded murder on an innocent victim. If you ever find yourself in this position, know that The matrix has you. Everyday the matrix of media, religion, and propaganda are murdering our minds. It’s time to wake up. If Neo and Morpheus can do it, maybe we can too.
