If you had to live on peanut butter and jelly for a certain period of time, you could. Here’s why.

Admit it. Dressing up as peanut butter and jelly really for Halloween got you thinking. Can I live on this? Can I actually live on peanut butter and jelly? Ok, so maybe you’ve never wondered this. But with the unpredictable economy and the uncertainty of life in general, it’s time to know. Can you live on peanut butter? And can you live on jelly? And if you had to, could you make that duo work?

The answer is definitely yes. Let’s break it down.

Calories

Peanut butter is loaded with calories. If you’re going to live on something, it might as well be something that has a lot of calories. That way if you get sick of it, at least you don’t have to eat as much of it.  A single tablespoon of peanut butter has 94 calories, according to a quick Google search. 5 tablespoons of that and you’re approaching 500 calories. Only 20 table spoons and you’ve got most of your calories for the day. Just make sure to walk really slow and don’t do any heavy lifting. Avoid the treadmill at all costs. You might burn some of it off.

Jelly

As you’re chewing and chewing with that all that peanut butter in your mouth, you will start thinking. Maybe I should add some jelly. The jelly induces the saliva and the saliva breaks down the peanut butter more easily. One tablespoon of jelly has about 56 calories. Add that in, and the less peanut butter you need to eat. Bottom line: You need to live on peanut butter to a lesser degree. Once you’ve done so for a month or so, you’ll be happy about that.

Peanut Butter

No article on how to live on peanut butter and jelly would be complete without mentioning the nutrition of peanut butter. Here’s what the science says. According to healthline, “A 100g portion of peanut butter contains (4): Carbohydrate: 20 grams of carbs (13% of calories), 6 of which are fiber. Protein: 25 grams of protein (15% of calories), which is quite a lot compared to most other plant foods. Fat: 50 grams of fat, totaling about 72% of calories.” That’s right, you can live on that shit.

Bread

Let us take a moment to talk about bread. You can’t have peanut butter and jelly without bread. I suppose you could. But do you really want to? The trick to this whole thing is to get that peanut butter and jelly and slam it between two slices of bread and make it into a sandwich. Two slices of bread contain about 158 calories. You see where I’m going with this? According to my calculations you would only have to eat 4 to 6 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to get your calories for the day.

Live on Peanut Butter and Jelly? Hell Yes.

Can you do it? Of course you can. The science is there to back you up. You can do a lot of things with peanut butter and jelly. Sing a song about it. Make cookies out of it. Even let it inspire your new hair color. But mostly, you’ll just want to slather it between two pieces of bread, grab a glass of milk and sit down on the couch for an awesome snack.

It should be noted that you’ll be missing many essential nutrients needed for a healthy body. So only do this if there is a zombie apocalypse. You have been warned.
